The undoing of service work: (Dis)connective labour, digital transformation of the hospitality workplace, and the search for meaning – invited research seminar at Cardiff Business School

I’ve spent the past ten months working on my Reboot project funded by The British Academy. I’ve interviewed 60+ hospitality workers, employers and industry experts about their experiences of technological change, and the impacts it has on the nature of hospitality work and workplace interactions.

I’ve been trying to make sense of the huge (and fascinating) labyrinth of data I’ve gathered.

My presentation for colleagues at Cardiff Business School revolved around three key fundamental questions:

• How do we move beyond the discourse of efficiency and techno-solutionism?
• How do we re-evaluate the role of technology and its impact on human interactions?
• How do we bring the meaningful human interaction back to the centre of hospitality?

I’m very happy that my work connected with colleagues at Cardiff University and provoked many insightful questions to reflect on.
I’m very grateful to Prof. Dean Stroud for inviting me and to Dr Jonathan Preminger for hosting this joint ERU/SOCSI session.
