Creating illustrations inspired by the eight audio-narratives

To visually accompany the audio-narratives, eight illustrations were created in collaboration with a very talented 3rd Year Illustration student Aleksander Maczynski.

Over several months, through weekly meetings, we worked on conceptualising the illustrations and embedding the key themes from the study in a visual way to capture the physical landscapes and materialities of the changing hospitality workspaces and the ways in which digital transformation manifests in these physical spaces.

The result of this process are powerful and detailed illustrations visually capturing the essence of the project.

Aleksander was able to submit these illustrations as part of his undergraduate portfolio and the illustrations were also chosen by his tutors to be submitted to the World Illustration Awards competition for young talent.

‘During the creation of the illustrations, I explored many ways of expressing the issue at hand, I explored imaginative worlds, scenarios, people and objects to come to a conclusion. Initially there were many ideas however as an aspiring concept artist I drew from the games industry exploring their ideas of environment and architectural design. Working through different ideas I came up with a visual idea of confining hospitality to isometric rooms in the same way games have done in the past, this allowed me to design theme, industry, mood and atmosphere all in one space.

Working with Agnieszka was a great pleasure, with weekly meetings and taking in of outside perspectives we came to new ideas of representing the project in a cohesive manner on what felt like collaborators working together, rather than a client and illustrator basis. However, with my personal experience within the industry and the insights of someone outside the industry, we came to realise the important issues within the industry often coming to conversations analysing the industry and its contemporary issues.

Throughout the project, I had the opportunity to learn a lot about how my industry works, being able to create freelance work gave me insight to client-illustrator communication, how clients insight can change and develop ideas and thought me a lot about how I can adapt and develop myself and my illustrations on a client to client basis. All of this developed me as an illustrator and prepared me for my future career within the industry and gave me an opportunity to be seen as a professional’.
